I made a DIY DDR pad using aluminium foil, magnet wire, and a micro-controller(RIGHT) compared to the conventional DDR pad (LEFT). The DIY uses conductivity with you as half the circuit and the pad is the other half of the circuit. When you touch the foil it completes the circuit and registers it as an input. Conventional pad uses pressure which takes a while to register while conductivity is instantaneous. The DIY is also foldable so it can fit inside a small backpack.
